4. Dating Safety Guide
The most important rule: anyone who asks you for money in the name of romance should be treated as a scammer. These tips help you stay safe online and when meeting in person.
1. Chatting online
- Keep the conversation on TrueLove until you know the person well, before swapping WeChat, phone numbers or other contacts.
- Do not share your home address, workplace, bank details, ID numbers or daily routine.
- Watch for red flags: declaring love very quickly, avoiding video calls, always working overseas, talking about investments or crypto, or a sudden emergency that needs money.
- Try a video call first to confirm they match their photos.
- Never send intimate photos you would not want others to see.
2. Meeting for the first time
- Meet in a busy public place during the day, such as a café or shopping centre.
- Arrange your own transport. Do not let them pick you up from home.
- Tell a friend or family member when and where you are meeting and who with, and agree on a time to check in.
- Keep your phone charged, drink in moderation, and never leave your drink unattended.
- If you feel uncomfortable, you can leave at any time. You do not need a reason.
3. Consent
Consent must be freely given, sober and clear, and can be withdrawn at any time. A person who is intoxicated or unable to express their wishes cannot consent.
4. Spotting romance scams
| Common tactic | What to do |
|---|---|
| Claims to be an overseas soldier, doctor or engineer who can never meet | Insist on a video call; never send money |
| Promotes a "guaranteed" investment, gambling or crypto platform | Stop contact immediately and report |
| A sudden emergency: hospital bills, customs fees, airfare | Do not send money or receive parcels for them |
| Wants to move the chat to another app | Stay on TrueLove so you can report and keep evidence |
5. If something goes wrong
- Report and block the person in the app, and keep screenshots as evidence.
- If you have sent money, contact your bank immediately.

7. Extra guidance for AI-assisted and video-mediated interactions
A verified-looking image, a short video call or AI-generated badge does not establish someone's criminal history, civil status or motives. Be alert to voice cloning, deepfakes, staged video calls and requests to move to unmoderated messaging. We will not market a screening or verification capability until it has been tested and its limitations disclosed.
8. Support limitations
TrueLove is not an emergency response service, law enforcement body, psychologist or legal adviser. Contact appropriate professionals, financial institutions or emergency services directly when there is an immediate risk. Reporting through the app complements but never replaces those services.
